The best Pittsburgh snacks: chicken wings, seitan wings, pickles & pretzels

Plus a game plan for Valentine’s Day

This Sunday is the Super Bowl and thus you are likely going to want some snacks. (Let’s be honest, if the Steelers aren’t playing in the Super Bowl, most of us just show up for the celebration of snacks.) We’ve been training for the big game (the pandemic has basically been 10 months of snack training) and have put together a few stories to help you with your game day snacking strategy.

Pittsburgh Snacks

Chicken Wings: We asked some local chicken wing enthusiasts about the best spots for chicken wings in Pittsburgh.

Vegan Wings: We tried seitan wings from five different local restaurants to figure out which reigns supreme.

Pretzels: One of the best deals in town. The Pretzel Shop on Carson Street has been making pretzels by hand since 1927. Check out our video about The Pretzel Shop and plan to pick up your pretzels on Saturday because they are not open on Sundays.

Pickles: Since we are making a big dill* about snacks, it’s a good time to look at some Pittsburgh pickle options. Check out our Q&A with Pittsburgh Pickle Co. and keep an eye out for Bridge City Brinery’s pickles. Bridge City Brinery was recently featured in the New York Times.

These pretzels are making me thirsty…*

We’ve got suggestions for that too. Here is a guide to local breweries that deliver. Many require you to place your order by the end of day Friday so start clicking. And if you are looking for an alternative to beer, we’ve got a guide to non-alcoholic options from local breweries. If you need something a little stronger to help you through three and half hours of watching Tom Brady, we’ve got a guide to Pittsburgh vodka (which pairs nicely with the pickles).

Pro-tip: Mad Mex has put together a handy tailgate box for Super Bowl Sunday. Chips, salsa, burritos or quesadillas, and wings in one convenient pack.

Valentine’s Day Game Plan

Here is a round up of special Valentine’s Day takeout meals. From heart-shaped pizza to a Julia Child’s inspired menu, we’ve found a range of options.

Have you picked out a Valentine’s Day card yet? We’re loving some of the quarantine cards from Sapling Press. Watch our video about this letterpress print shop that makes cards by hand right here in Pittsburgh.

*apologies for the pickle puns and Seinfeld references.
