Surprise Guests at the Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade

Several years ago I was walking through Downtown Pittsburgh and almost walked in the path of Vice President Joe Biden’s motorcade outside the William Penn Hotel. Biden returned to Pittsburgh to march in the Labor Day parade last year.

Given that Pittsburgh hosts one of the largest Labor Day parades in the country, there might be a few presidential candidates marching through downtown Pittsburgh on Monday morning.

The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City in 1882. Labor Day has been a national holiday since 1894.

Though now many people associate Labor Day with barbecues and the beach, it started with calls for humane working conditions and higher wages.
