Stop No. 3 of our specialty sandwich series, Local x Global: SHARPSBURG is a rare opportunity for you to taste what happens when Luke Cypher, head chef and owner of Blue Sparrow, takes menu inspiration from one of the food truck’s regularly scheduled locations. On Saturday, Nov. 2, join us at Dancing Gnome Brewery from 12-6 p.m.

Most folks recognize the iconic Heinz smokestacks on the Northside, but you might not know that H.J. Heinz actually started his business up the river in Sharpsburg in 1869. He made and bottled his first product – horseradish – from the kitchen of his Sharpsburg residence.

What happens when Pittsburgh’s global street food truck, Blue Sparrow, decides to go off-menu and find inspiration in a local neighborhood?

The premise of this series is simple: a global food truck, specializing in street foods such as bibimbap and bahn mi, focuses on a local Pittsburgh flavor or history. We want to tell a little bit of Pittsburgh’s story with every bite.

And for this one, we are obviously using horseradish. The “Sharpsburg Sandwich” features house rye bread, pastrami, beer mustard, horseradish sauce, pickle, light slaw, and sharp cheddar.

A little Heinz history

It was said that H.J. Heinz chose the 57 because “5” was his lucky number and the number “7” was his wife’s lucky number. So if you preorder your sandwich, we will make it your lucky day, too, and throw in a beer from Dancing Gnome for $10.57.

The first stop on this passport to Pittsburgh featured a kielbasa, house kraut, mustard, and hot pepper cheese pressed sandwich under the iconic “Welcome to Deutschtown” mural on the side of Allegheny City Brewery. The second stop took us to Brew Gentlemen in Braddock, for a sandwich inspired by a steelworker’s lunchbox: beer-braised ham on a housemade roll.

For those of you familiar with Blue Sparrow’s current menu offerings, you know that Cypher and his team typically serve items such as japchae noodles, bibimbap, or a burger with a ramen noodle bun — global street food. They make everything from scratch, from their bahn mi bun to their kimchi, and this will be no exception.
