Oakland neighborhood history

Newsletter: Outdoor history & two brunch options for beer lovers

Plus a look at all of the local soap makers in town

by Lindsay Patross | August 28, 2020

This week we’ve got some unique takes on local history. Tune into our interview with a Millvale Business owner to learn about the history of Girty’s Woods. When the rain stops, you can explore some of the outdoor history in Oakland. If you are looking for a Sunday drive, consider making some stops in Somerset. If you prefer to stay put on Sunday, we’ve got two spots for brunch + beer.

DINE: A beer lover’s brunch
An elevated take on kegs and eggs, Sunday brunch at Lorelei is an outstanding option for the beer lovers. Lorelei’s brunch is available for takeout too.

WALKING TOUR: Step through Oakland at your own pace
We put together a self-guided walking tour of the Oakland neighborhood, but here’s the catch. It won’t lead you to ANY museums or libraries. Lace up and tell a friend who loves Pittsburgh history.

ROAD TRIP: Somerset
Located just 90 minutes from Pittsburgh, here are some of the distilleries and diners that make Somerset an ideal destination for a quick road trip.

SHOP LOCAL: Worsh your hands
From sustainable to silly, stock up on some soap from one of the many local soapmakers.

Podcast: Tea Time with Danielle Spinola

This week on the podcast, we get to know Danielle Spinola – the mastermind behind Tupelo Honey Teas. Spinola’s Millvale-based tea shop collaborates with breweries and distilleries, sells blended teas that are concepted and made in-house and she’s even working on a foraged series of teas that tie into the preservation of Girty’s Woods.

Pop-up Picks

FRI & SAT // Blue Sparrow x Eleventh Hour (Lawrenceville)
As part of Eleventh Hour’s brewery anniversary celebrations, the Blue Sparrow food truck will be at the Lawrenceville brewery this Friday and Saturday. Look for special releases from Eleventh Hour and fun menu items from the food truck. [Learn more about Blue Sparrow’s greyhound bus in our video.]

FRI & SAT // Pittsburgh Sandwich Society (Lawrenceville & takeout)
Grab a delicious burger (or hot chicken) on Friday OR Saturday from Sandwich Society’s side lot. Head to 108 43rd St. in Lawrenceville and look for the gravel lot. Order ahead to guarantee your sandwich; they are known to sell out quickly. [Check out our video on the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society to meet the team.]

SAT // Abjuration x 10.7 Marina (Verona)
The Abjuration Brewing team has confirmed their outdoor pop-up for Sat Aug. 29. They’ll be in Verona at 10.7 Marina pouring draft beers along the river. Expect to see Billu’s Indian Grill food truck taking care of the meal requirement (go hungry) so you can legally order a drink for on-site consumption, per Allegheny County guidelines. [Can’t make it to Verona? Check out our list of local beers that are perfect for summer sipping.]

SUN // Blue Sparrow x Roundabout Brewery (Lawrenceville)
Finally, Blue Sparrow is keeping with a longstanding tradition of popping up at Roundabout Brewery’s Lawrenceville location on any month that contains FIVE Sundays. That’s right, it’s the fifth Sunday in August so expect a special fifth Sunday of the month brunch menu at Roundabout. The brunch and beers begin flowing at 11 a.m. on Sun, Aug. 30. [Don’t forget that Roundabout also has a beer garden pop-up along the North Shore trail.]

A house hiding in a garage

From the street, this looks like a three-car garage, but inside this building has been converted to a cozy living space. Located in historic Manchester, 1517 Manhattan St. is listed for $199,900.
