Ep. 17 Pittsburgh-inspired puppets with Dave English

From a puppet show in city hall to puppet karaoke, Dave English is the one pulling the strings.

by Lindsay Patross | February 26, 2020

In this episode of The Slaw: Staying on top of Pittsburgh, we talk with Dave English, artist and puppet maker about leaving and coming back to Pittsburgh, puppet karaoke and bringing puppets to City Hall. This week’s event pick is The Goonies & beer tasting at The Oaks Theater. For this week’s collaboration, we head to Millvale to see how Baby Loves Tacos is using Grist House beer in their brisket.

Ep. 17: Dave English

Meet Dave English

Dave English is an artist, educator and puppeteer.

City Council Puppet Show

As president of the Puppetry Guild of Pittsburgh, Dave organized a puppet show in the City-County building. Artist Kirsten Ervin created a set of finger puppets depicting all of the members of the Pittsburgh City Council.

March 26 & 27: The Dragon of Polish Hill

Dave English and his collaborator, Will Schutze, will perform The Dragon of Polish Hill at the New Hazlett Theater.

The Dragon of Polish Hill tells the story of two neighborhood residents who were destined never to know each other until Stanley Onion, a 115-year-old man with dementia, and Willy James, a rabbit-eared performance artist, are brought together by a chance encounter. The circumstances that follow force Willy to consider his own values in light of their friendship. This performance explores cultures colliding in a changing urban neighborhood.

A very Pittsburgh Collaboration: Baby Loves Taco + Grist House

Baby Loves Tacos now has a second location in Millvale. The brisket for the beef tacos is braised with the Gristly Brown Bear Ale from their Millvale neighbor, Grist House Brewery. If you are headed over to Millvale for a bear, stop by Baby Loves Tacos for a beer-braised snack beforehand.
