Very Local is excited to be one of the sponsors for this month’s CreativeMorning’s talk. (New to CreartiveMornings? Keep reading for all the details on this free monthly lecture series.) The theme for July is “the end” and the speaker is Mónica Ruiz, executive director at Casa San José.

From the CreativeMorning’s website:

Mónica Ruiz is the Executive Director at Casa San José. Mónica has been working with Casa since 2014 when she started as an intern, then moved to service coordinator and then community organizer. Prior to that, she worked for Catholic Charities as a case manager. She was born in Cleveland Ohio and has Latino roots from Guatemala and Puerto Rico, where her mom and her dad are originally from.

Mónica is a powerful advocate for Latinos on legal, housing, development, and educational issues. She fights for those facing deportation proceedings and launches projects to assist women, children, and youth. In addition, she partners with political, labor, religious, and law enforcement leadership to make Pittsburgh stronger and more welcoming to all.

What is CreativeMornings?

CreativeMornings is a monthly morning meetup that features free coffee and a short talk by a local member of the creative community. These monthly talks take place in more than 190 cities around the globe. CreativeMornings was founded in 2008 by Tina Roth Eisenberg, who writes the blog/website Swissmiss. She is the founder of Tattly, a line of temporary tattoos (you may have seen in Starbucks last year), as well as a founder of Friends Work Here, a co-working space in Brooklyn, New York.

Each month, CreativeMornings picks a one-word theme, and the local events feature a speaker who gives a short 20-30 minute talk on the featured theme. Past themes include chaos, color, risk, and intention.

CreativeMornings Pittsburgh

CreativeMornings launched in Pittsburgh in December 2012 with a talk titled “Making Learning Fun” by Nina Barbuto, founder of Assemble (a community arts space in Garfield) at The Warhol Museum. CreativeMornings Pittsburgh has been hosting monthly events around the city ever since.

  • When: One Friday a month, usually the last Friday of the month.
  • Where: Events take place at different venues around the city of Pittsburgh.
  • Time: Always 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Cost: Free.

What to expect at CreativeMornings…

  • Coffee – every CreativeMornings Pittsburgh event includes coffee, occasionally breakfast, but it depends on the location.
  • Conversation/networking – if you wish, there is time to chat with other attendees. More on the networking stuff below.
  • A talk from a local thought-leader – usually 20-30 minutes long.

Who should attend CreativeMornings Pittsburgh events?

The short answer: Everyone is welcome. If you are interested in learning something new or hearing what kinds of unique and interesting things that Pittsburghers are doing, then the CreativeMornings talks are a great way to spend a Friday morning. I don’t want to describe CreativeMornings as a networking event, because most networking events are formal and awkward, and many people hate the idea of networking. If you want to come to CreativeMornings and meet some other people you can do that; if you want to attend the event, listen to the speaker and leave, you can do that too.

One of the nice things about the CreativeMornings events is that both speakers and guests come from a wide range of specialties. This is not just an event for artists or designers, but a place where anyone, even the most corporate types, share how they are creative in their industry.
