Meeting ID: 543 972 738
Go ahead and download (or update) Zoom before our event Friday morning. Get a feel for Zoom and test your audio/camera. Make sure to join us via the Zoom link right at 8:30 AM to participate in the community gloriousness. We’ll be using breakout rooms to partake in virtual hugs, high-fives, and other shenanigans to keep us connected. If you’re popping on later, our intro and speaker start at 9:00 AM.
As we all look for ways to stay connected during this period of social distancing, CreativeMornings, the monthly, typically in-person, breakfast lecture series, has gone virtual.
What is CreativeMornings?
Known for their in-person activations and inspiring talks, CreativeMornings is a monthly morning meetup that features free coffee and a short talk by a local member of the creative community.
Founded in 2008, CreativeMornings now has 214 chapters in 65 countries around the world. Every month, local chapters choose a local speaker that fits the global theme. Previous themes include: love, magic, tradition, water, courage and preserve. The theme for March is identity.
In December 2012, CreativeMornings launched in Pittsburgh with a talk titled Making Learning Fun by Nina Barbuto, founder of Assemble — the community arts space in Garfield. Since then, a dedicated team of volunteers has organized the monthly event in different venues and neighborhoods around the city.
Since they are a part of a larger, global conversation, CreativeMornings talks are already filmed so that anyone can access the archive, but this is the first time the talk will be livestreamed.
Creating Community: Virtual hugs and high-fives
“As creative humans, adapting is what we do. And we’re seeing the magic of generous, creative responses to this pandemic ripple across our community and the world. We hope to contribute to that magic,” Bridget Mullins, Engagement Instigator for the CreativeMornings/PGH community, explains.
For those of you who have never been, a CreativeMornings event here in Pittsburgh almost always starts with some sort of interaction or activation intended to connect you with the folks sitting immediately next to you and to the larger group. It’s usually playful, and while participation is not mandatory, almost everyone participates. In order to practice safe social distancing, the CM Pittsburgh team brainstormed innovative ways to replicate some of this aspect of their programming virtually.
“CreativeMornings/PGH has always believed in the power of simple things. Face-to-face connections. Shared food and drink. Hugs and high-fives. Laughter and warmth. We want to experiment with gently, playfully, and imaginatively maintaining this essence in the virtual space,” Mullins says. “We’ll be crowdsourcing the intro to our video. We’ll be encouraging people to show up with their morning beverage of choice. We’ll be using some fun Zoom features to connect in small groups.”
CreativeMornings/Pittsburgh March: Gia Fagnelli
This month’s speaker is Gia Fagnelli and the theme is identity. From the event details:
Gia Fagnelli is a multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Fagnelli is the current title holder of Mx. Innovative from the 2019 Erotic City Awards (PDX) and has performed and been featured at House of Yes in Brooklyn, The Carnegie Museum of Art and Miami Art Basel. They use movement, drag, video art and soundscapes to explore ideas around gender, sexuality, grief and intergenerational curses.
“There will, undoubtedly, be flurries of technological chaos! We will welcome it, let it fuel our laughter, and continue on, together,” Mullins says.

We ❤️ Creative Mornings/Pittsburgh
Yeah, we have written about CreativeMornings before and we even collaborated with them on CreativeMornings at Night, a sold-out event last September that traded out coffee for cocktails, breakfast for hors d’oeuvres, and a 9 a.m. start time to 6 p.m.
