Just like your grandma’s pumpkin pie but in a beer format. The pumpkin pie milkshake ale is made with cookie malt and vanilla beans.
ABV is our weekly series that highlights a different beer from a local Pittsburgh brewery every week. Check out our past picks here.
PUMPKIN + BEER = PUMPKIN BEER
OK, now add in some cookie malt and milk sugar. Oh, and vanilla beans.
You get the picture. Abjuration has a delicious, seasonally relevant beer on tap for you. It celebrates our beloved pumpkin. Let’s get to it.

Pouring today at Boos, Booze & Brews at Clever Park benefiting the #parkwaywestrotary. Then pouring tomorrow at the @ringintherocks art crawl. Event details on our website and Facebook page. . . . . . Pumpkin Pie Milkshake Ale (PPMA v1.0) – 6.0% Brewed with 2row, oats, wheat, pumpkin, brown sugar, and milk sugar (lactose) for a full body with a residue sweetness. Then conditioned with an absurd amount of Madagascar vanilla beans and a calculated amount of allspice, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon sticks. The aroma and flavor of this beer is strong pumpkin pie and vanilla.
Why we recommend it: I normally shy away from pumpkin beers (I know, it’s fall and it’s the pumpkin-everything season). I don’t mean to be a hater; pumpkin in beer just ain’t my thing.
That being said, Abjuration leaned into this one – and nailed it.
Be advised: This beer DOES contain lactose.
This full-body pumpkin beer carries a sweet taste and a sweeter aroma. You’ll be tuned in to the strong notes of pumpkin pie and vanilla. On the subtler side, pay attention to Abjuration’s calculated levels of allspice, ginger, nutmeg, clove and cinnamon sticks.
Before hitting the draft lines, Pumpkin Pie Milkshake Ale was conditioned on Madagascar vanilla beans for that final OOMPH. Pumpkin people, this beer is for you. Go get it.
Also, at 6% ABV, you can comfortably have more than one before turning into a pumpkin yourself. Neato.
When is it available: Pumpkin Pie Milkshake Ale went on draft Oct 17 and should remain available for the next few weeks.
How is it served: Draft only. No cans for this one but – depending on availability – you can fill up a carry-out growler to share with friends.
Abjuration offers SEVERAL pour options for its draft beer. You can get Pumpkin Pie Milkshake Ale in the following sizes: 4oz, 8oz, 16oz, 32oz (to-go), 64oz (to-go).
Where is it available: Abjuration Brewing (McKees Rocks)
Honorable Mention Beer: Vanilla Cookie Milkshake Ale (Milkshake Ale, 5.9% ABV)

Some fresh haze joining our taps today along side plenty of Vanilla Cookie Milkshake cans. . . . . . No Boil India Pale Ale (NBIPA v1.1) – 7.2% After a body boosting mash, the wort was pasteurized at a temperature well below boiling. Hops are steeped during the pasteurization process. The no-boil process leads to a plush body and a dense haze. Version 1.1 features Citra and Idaho 7 during the pasteurization phase, and Sabro and Mosaic hops during the dry hop.
Know before you go: Abjuration Brewing in McKees Rocks

Parking: Street parking is generally available (You might need to walk 1-2 blocks).
Food: No in-house food program, but they often bring in food trucks/pop-ups AND allow you to bring your own food (You can order in from any of the nearby restaurants).
Getting to Abjuration Brewing: You can absolutely bus to Abjuration; transfer your way onto the 22 or the 24 lines for VERY easy access. Literally, the 24 bus drops you off right at the front step. Uber/Lyft are always good too.
