Enjoy the view from 10.7 Marina’s pop-up brewery garden in Verona

The outdoor space offers a stellar view of the Allegheny, along with a rotating selection of local food (and Abjuration Brewing pouring beer on weekends).

ABV is our weekly series that highlights a different beer from a local Pittsburgh brewery every week. Check out our past picks here.

While fall hasn’t QUITE fallen yet, temperatures are starting to cool and there’s an all-too-familiar crisp in the morning air.

If you grew up playing soccer or running cross country, I’m talking about that faint, wispy breeze that triggers memories of whistles blowing and orange slices.

Here’s a hot take: as long as we are all social distancing, I have a feeling we’ll see more pop-up style beer gardens emerge here in Pittsburgh.

Pre-pandemic, the Very Local team was a big fan of pop-up events – pairing up some of our favorite Pittsburgh breweries with local food trucks in low-key, approachable locations around the city.

10.7 Marina in Verona

I recently visited a new pop-up venue located in Verona, just up the Allegheny River. The 10.7 Marina offers kayaking, canoeing and standup paddleboard rentals. (There’s also a docked houseboat you can rent on Airbnb – more on that below.)

10.7 Marina is ALSO home to a picture-perfect pop-up beer garden.

Located at 314 Arch Street in Verona, the pop-up offers a socially distanced, fully outside space that always includes a food option (usually a food truck) and – best part of all – features an unrivaled view of the Allegheny River. While I normally tell folks to opt for takeout – this is a spot I feel comfortable recommending for an outside beer amongst (distanced) people.

Dang, I miss people.

Read on for a little primer if you’re planning to visit the 10.7 Marina pop-up beer garden.

Know Before You Go: 10.7 Marina Pop-Up Beer Garden

  • Location: 314 Arch St, Verona, PA 15147
  • Marina Hours: Saturdays and Sundays (11am to 6pm)
  • Pop-Up Hours: usually ~5pm to ~9pm on Saturdays
  • Parking: Free parking in the lot adjacent to the marina (there’s also plenty of street parking along Arch St, Penn St and other residential streets)

How it Works: upon arrival, guests are directed straight to the food vendor (normally a food truck). Due to COVID regulations, you must first order a meal before you will be served a drink. After placing a food order, you’ll be given a small ‘ticket’ which – when presented to the beer vendor – entitles you to place an order for beer. Once you get your beer, the host (usually someone from the marina or the brewery) will guide you to your socially-distanced seating area. All the seats are good, some that overlook the river are exceptionally good (they’re usually the first to get scooped up).

Is it Pet Friendly? Yes! You can bring the pupper along to the pop-up. The hosts simply ask that you (and your dog) continue to practice social distancing while at the pop-up.

What’s on the Beer Menu: While the pop-up rotates amongst a handful of local breweries – including Hop Farm, Abjuration and Dancing Gnome – you can count on Abjuration to be there on Saturdays through September and October. Both times I went to the pop-up, it was indeed Abjuration slinging beers in both draft and cans. If you’re just rolling by for takeout, they will happily sell you a 4-pack of cans to-go. Expect an IPA to be a mainstay on the beer menu along with some seasonal options. You can learn more Abjuration’s offerings via their Instagram, which is regularly updated with new releases.

Stay on a houseboat at 10.7 Marina

Yep, you can spend the night on the Allegheny River in the Oolikhanna Houseboat. The houseboat is available for rent ($139/night) until November. This houseboat is offered by Kelly Jane. She is an Airbnb super host and also has another apartment for rent in Pittsburgh.
